December 2003

December 26: Today is the official release date for Battery Life's Shotgun Loudmouth, The Mighty Stars' The Mighty Stars Are Go! and Action Now's All Your Dreams...and more CDs. If you don't like buying online, you can now ask your friendly local record store to order the CDs from Parasol and CTD! Also, don't forget the Kjehl Johansen 2-CD box set, Pie & Isolation, which is currently available direct from Avebury Records and at CDBaby.

December 22: European fans of Action Now can buy All Your Dreams...and more from Soundflat Mailorder in Germany. Thanks to Soundflat for featuring the Action Now CD on its home page! Yes, we know Soundflat is trying to sell the CD, but we did appreciate their description: "Insane 27 (!!) track CD incl. all the incredible cool songs of Action Now (feat. Paula Pierce of Pandoras' fame..!) Some of the best Powerpop you can get."

Also, we missed Action Now being mentioned in ICE Magazine. It was in #197's "From The Vaults" back in August.

December 20: Daredevil Magazine has published a review of The Mighty Stars' The Mighty Stars Are Go! EP: "This is the best Garage Pop I´ve heard in a while. This is happy music...imagine the Housemartins would go Punk. Great stuff.
= 1+ ( OVER THE TOP)"

Daredevil's Ralf Burkart also had something nice to say about Avebury Records: "First of all I have to say that Avebury Records seems to have a good hand for signing fantastic young bands in the Garage genre." Thanks, Ralf, we'll try to keep up the good work!

December 16: England's Logo Magazine has review both Action Now's Action Now's All Your Dreams...and More and Battery Life's Shotgun Loudmouth. About Action Now, Logo's Gillian Nash said, "Though they tended toward a power-pop version of Rezillos, in places they also prefigured the likes of Orange Juice and the whole C86 movement. As the live segment shows, they were a far more powerful proposition live, illustrated by See If You Can, sounding like a chirpy, suntanned Jam." The review of Battery Life, also by Gillian Nash, pointed out that "Californiaís Battery Life sound like The Waterboys might had they studied Harry Smithís Anthology Of American Folk Music rather than the bottom of Van Morrisonís beermat, and speak of the direction that Josh Rouse might have travelled had he hooked up with Paul Westerberg."

December 15: Daredevil Magazine was very enthusiastic in their review of Battery Life's Shotgun Loudmouth: "Wow...this is the disc which is spinnin´ in my CD-Player for a week now and it´s not gettin´ boring. Why?...cause the three guys of Battery Life are damn good musicians and the now how to make catchy songs with a lot of heart and emotion in it! Shotgun Loudmouth is so full of variety, cause Battery Life mixes Pop with Punk and put some Country and Garage to it.
= 1+ ( OVER THE TOP)"

December 13: Daredevil Magazine in Germany has reviewed Action Now's All Your Dreams...and More. Here's a bit of what Daredevil Magazine "inventor" Ralf Burkart had to say: "This album contains 12 studio songs which are so huge and groovin´...you have to dance to this...plus...a live concert from 1981...a really good one. All in all the best Garage stuff I heard in a long, long time.
= 1+ ( OVER THE TOP)"

December 9: There's new stuff up on the Action Now history pages, including info on v.3 of The Direct Hits, the debut of the v.2 photo gallery, plus more pictures of The Rage, including Paula Pierce in the recording studio for the first time (1978, in Simi Valley, CA) and outside the Whisky A-Go-Go (1977) on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.

December 2: The Mighty Stars promise that their next show "is gonna be a real tip-top night. It's basically our Christmas party and we're gonna be playing with Bucky and Hacksaw who are two of our favourite Bristol bands! This is gonna be a fantastic show and all those who attend will leave with big grins and warmed hearts. This gig is on Tuesday, 16th December and will take place at The Croft in Bristol. There'll be mince pies, mulled wine and maybe if we can persuade him, Kim Fowley dressed up like Father Christmas!" Then, just before The Mighty Stars invade Holland, they'll be playing Saturday, January 10th at The Dirty Rider Club at the Southern K in Kilburn, London. Just a reminder, you can catch the boys in Amsterdam (Tuesday, January 13 @ The Paradiso), Groningen (Thursday, January 15 @ The Vera) and at a location-to-be-determined in Rotterdam.

July 2003

July 30: Action Now played its first show in 20 years as part of the International Pop Overthrow festival. Replacing the late Paula Pierce was Kristi Callan (of Wednesday Week and solo fame) on vocals and 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, and Chris Bagarozzi (of Clawhammer, Midget Handjob fame, and Paula's replacement in Action Now in 1983!) on lead guitar. Drummer Scott Hillman was unavailable for the show, so Kelly Callan (also of Wednesday Week) filled in on drums. The show was at The Echo, in Los Angeles on July 29.

The set consisted of I Can't Get Over You, Stop Pretending, This One Chance, I Want You, Try, Anyone But You and I'm Not Trying To Hurt You.

Check out photos from the show here.

If you missed the show, all is not lost. There will be a record release party this fall when All Your Dreams...and more is released. As a bonus, it will be the first reunion show will all three surviving original members!
